(Offline) Fieldwork/hiking App
GPS coordinates are essential for tracking to be safe and for collecting samples.
I always bring Garmin GPS, but this time I also used my phone!!
Now, I feel I can probably do fieldwork with only my phone and laptop.
Thanks to QGIS and Geographica (google play) / (IOS)
I could check where I walked and where I collected samples although I did not have internet.
Before fieldwork
1. Preparing map in QGIS
I made layers of a geological map
↑ QGIS Screenshot of the area where I do fieldwork
2. Downloading the map in Geographica App
Downloading the map of the area in the Geographica app
To download the map of the area, you just need to check the maps of the area on the screen. Then the maps will be stored on your phone automatically.
Starting fieldwork
3. Turn on GPS
4. Start tracking GPS
These should be set when fieldwork starts.
The icon becomes green when it is on.
Collecting samples
5. Add Marker (saving the sample's coordinate)
Recording sample's coordinate
We can write down the sample name and its description as well when we save the coordinate
Finishing fieldwork
6. Save the track
In my case, I saved the track when I called a day
It shows distance, time etc.
7. Exporting the track and marker (sample point) to Laptop
The track (red line) and marker (purple diamond) were shown like this, when I finished the first day.
To export the data
open menu
-> files
-> track / marker
-> select and export the track / marker which you want to export
I exported the track data as KML file and the marker data as GPX file
Then, transferred them to my laptop.
8. Import and show the data in QGIS (vector files)
We can check the exact place where we walked and where we collected samples on the geological map without the internet.
